Environmental Educators

Location: Blue Ridge Outdoor Education Center, Toccoa, GA. Camp Mikell consists of 400+ acres surrounded on three sides by the Chattahoochee National Forest. Set in Little Toccoa Creek Valley, surrounded by forested slopes with streams and waterfalls abundant, Blue Ridge is perfectly situated to take full advantage of this unique ecological area and provide diverse and exciting educational experiences. Many outdoor recreation opportunities are available. Camp Mikell has an outdoor volleyball court, large field and equipment for a variety of sports, an outdoor saltwater swimming pool and miles of trails for hiking. The surrounding area provides many nearby hiking and biking opportunities. Only 90 minutes from Atlanta and one hour from Athens, home of the University of Georgia, Blue Ridge staff can easily get a taste of the big city.

Qualifications: Committed, energetic, community-oriented individuals. BS or BA required. Preference given to those with majors in biology, natural sciences, or related field. Knowledge of wetland, stream and forest ecology. Residential program experience and knowledge of Blue Ridge ecosystems preferred. Applicant should be dynamic and have a sincere interest in working with kids of all ages and learning about the natural world.

Duties: Teach and maintain environmental education classes in the beautiful southern Appalachians during residential programs, ages 7-16. Also, adventure programs, high ropes, climbing with kid and adult groups, some weekends. Opportunities available for curriculum development for experienced employees. Blue Ridge prides itself on meeting the needs of our schools by meeting the Georgia Performance Standards.

Benefits: $230/wk plus room & board and health insurance. First Aid, CPR, and high ropes training provided. Extensions on employment are available to interested employees. Training times are tentative based on our seasonal schedules, but we usually begin spring training mid-February and work through mid-May.

The Manor Home: We're pretty proud of our staff house. The house is on site with a short 5 minute walk to the office and main part of camp. The staff house or "Manor Home" has 5 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. There are two large common rooms. The comfy couch/watch a movie room and the fireplace/computer/read a good book room. Wireless internet is available at the house as well as the office, so you are invited to bring your own computer. If you do not have a computer for personal use, there is one available in the office. There is a large kitchen with a dishwasher, dishes, pots & pans etc, that the staff shares. Every staff member has their own cupboard and room in the fridge. We also have a laundry machine and dryer in the house.

Food: Meals are provided whenever there is a group at camp. There is a large and delicious salad bar offered at lunch and dinner and a cereal bar at breakfast. Students and teachers alike love the salad bar and mention the food as being much better than other camps they have visited!

To apply: Cover letter, resume, name and contact information for 3 references to Matt Wagner, Director.

Internships also available: $100/week, plus room/board, and all training.
